Two places carry the name. Great and Little Paxton sit on the Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire and are both in Domesday Book; Paxton in Berwickshire sits on the Scottish bank of the Tweed. They resolve the same way: an Old English man called Pæcc held a tūn, an enclosed farmstead, and the place went on carrying his name for a thousand years after anyone could say who he was. Families who left those villages took the place name with them as a surname, which is the usual English mechanism and the only route by which Paxton reached a modern birth certificate.
Its most consequential holder was a gardener. Joseph Paxton ran the glasshouses at Chatsworth, taught himself structural engineering on lily houses, and in 1851 sketched a design that became the Crystal Palace — an iron-and-glass building the length of five football pitches, put up in nine months for the Great Exhibition.
