The commonest is topographical: a man who lived beside a pear tree turns up in Middle English records as Roger atte Pirie, and atte Pirie wore down to Perry. The second is Welsh, from ap Harry, son of Harry, contracted the way ap Rhys became Price — though that line usually lands as Parry with an A. The third route is simple economy of effort: Peregrine is four syllables and Perry is two, and English speakers have been making that trade since the Tudors.
As a given name it is American and it is mid-century. Perry Como sang on radio and then television for four decades and put the name in every front room in the country. Perry Mason, Erle Stanley Gardner's undefeated defence attorney, put it on paperback spines from 1933 and on screen from 1957.
