Quinton is an English place name of the plainest possible construction: cwēn and tūn, queen and farmstead, an estate held by a queen. Royal women in Anglo-Saxon and Norman England held land in their own right, and the map still records it — there are Quintons in Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, the last of them now swallowed by Birmingham. People who moved away from those villages were identified by them, the identification hardened into a surname, and in the twentieth century the surname stepped forward into first-name use, as English place-name surnames reliably do.
Then there is the collision. Quinton and Quentin are unrelated — one is an Old English manor, the other a Latin ordinal by way of a French saint — but they landed on nearly the same sound, and American records have shuffled the spellings for a century. Plenty of Quintons were named for the saint and plenty of Quentins carry the manor. Neither is wrong. It is simply worth knowing which name you think you are giving, because the meanings are not interchangeable.
