History & meaning

Hebrew theophoric names are complete sentences, and Rafael is one of the more confident: rapha plus El, God has healed. Past tense, not a petition. The bearer who made the name is the archangel, and he is worth reading about, because he does not appear in the Hebrew canon at all. Raphael belongs to the Book of Tobit, where he travels in disguise as a young man's companion on a long journey, arranges a marriage, drives off a demon, and only at the end names himself as one of the angels who stand before God before curing the old man's blindness. That story is the whole basis of Raphael's association with healing, with medicine and with travellers.

The Church kept all three named archangels, and southern Europe kept Rafael as an ordinary name rather than a pious one. Córdoba took him as its patron and put stone columns topped with his figure all over the city. Italy produced Raffaello Sanzio of Urbino, dead at thirty-seven and buried in the Pantheon, which is why English speakers spell the name Raphael when they mean the painter. Spanish and Portuguese kept the single f and the end stress, and Brazil turned the whole thing into something that sounds, to an English ear, almost nothing like the spelling.

Why parents choose it

It crosses borders without alteration — a Rafael in Madrid, São Paulo, Tel Aviv and Chicago is spelled the same way in all four — and it comes with Rafa, one of the warmest short forms in any language. The meaning is also a good one to hand a child, which cannot be said of every archangel.

Rafael Nadal won fourteen French Open titles and twenty-two Grand Slam singles championships on a body that spent a decade being written off. Rafael Márquez captained Mexico at five consecutive World Cups between 2002 and 2018. Raffaello Sanzio painted the Vatican Stanze and died on his thirty-seventh birthday, by tradition, in 1520.

Consider instead

Gabriel is the fellow archangel and currently sits comfortably inside the U.S. top 50, if you want the same register with more company. Uriel is the archangel of tradition rather than scripture and is far rarer than either. Mateo keeps the Spanish sound and the biblical root in two fewer letters.
