History & meaning
The raven is the one bird the Norse could not leave alone. It followed armies, it ate what battles left, and it sat on the shoulders of the chief god as his intelligence service. Hrafn was accordingly both a given name and a byname, and Iceland still hands it to children unchanged. Danish shed the initial h and softened the middle, leaving Ravn: four letters, one syllable, and a meaning nobody has to look up.
The bird earned its place in the record repeatedly. Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson, according to Landnámabók, took three consecrated ravens to sea, released them one at a time, followed the third to land, spent a bad winter there and named the place Iceland out of spite. Viking fleets sailed under a raven banner, and the sagas treat a raven croaking over a field as a weather forecast for men. Hrafn Sveinbjarnarson, a chieftain and physician of the early thirteenth century killed in a feud, has a saga of his own; the Icelandic director Hrafn Gunnlaugsson made a career filming that world back at itself in the 1980s. In Denmark today, Ravn is commonest as a family name, which means a Danish child given it as a first name is doing something deliberate.

It is the shortest possible route to a Norse name with no explaining required — one syllable, a hard consonant at each end, a meaning visible to anyone who reads English. Parents drawn to nature names without the softness get exactly what they want. The one warning is that the English spelling Raven reads as a girl’s name in America; Ravn does not, but only just.
