Every hymn of the Rigveda is credited to a ṛṣi — Vishvamitra, Vasishtha, Atri, Bharadvaja and the families descended from them. The tradition is careful about the verb it uses. A ṛṣi is a mantra-draṣṭā, a seer of the mantra: he did not invent the verse, he perceived one that already was. That makes Rishi a name of a particular kind. It is not a god's name, and it is not an ordinary vocabulary word either. It is the title of the class of human beings whom the tradition treats as having received revelation, which is why it should be handled as a devotional choice rather than a stylish one.
The word stayed alive in every later layer of Indian religion and language. The saptarṣi, the seven sages, were identified with the stars of Ursa Major, so the category is literally written into the northern sky. Maharishi, great seer, entered English in the 1960s when Maharishi Mahesh Yogi began teaching in the West. As an ordinary given name Rishi is a twentieth-century development, and a common one: the actor Rishi Kapoor was born in 1952, when the name was already unremarkable in Bombay.
