The Irish word for a seal is rón, and the suffix -án is the one Irish uses to make a noun small and fond. Rónán is therefore a little seal, and the choice is not random: along the Atlantic coasts of Ireland and Scotland, seals were understood as people in another shape. The selkie stories — a seal that sheds its skin and walks ashore, a fisherman who hides the skin — belong to the same imagination that produced the name. Nobody can prove that a seventh-century monk named Rónán was thinking about selkies, but the folklore is old and the association is real.
Before it was anything else, Ronan was a clerical name, borne by a run of early Irish saints. The one who left a mark on literature is Rónán Finn, the cleric whose curse in the medieval tale Buile Shuibhne sends King Suibhne mad and sets him wandering Ireland as a half-bird — the text Seamus Heaney translated as Sweeney Astray. A different Ronan is venerated in Brittany, where the town of Locronan still carries his name.
