History & meaning
The word is old and unambiguous, and Arabic put it to work in the honorific pattern that dominated medieval titles: X al-Din, X of the faith. Nur al-Din was light of the faith, Salah al-Din righteousness of the faith, and Sayf al-Din was its sword — an epithet handed to commanders often enough that it eventually detached and became a first name on its own. Sayf al-Din Qutuz was the Mamluk sultan who marched out of Egypt and met the Mongol army at Ayn Jalut in Galilee in September 1260, the battle that stopped the Mongol advance through Syria. Older still is Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan, a sixth-century Himyarite king of Yemen who ended up as the hero of one of the great Arabic popular epics, a sprawling romance still recited by storytellers a thousand years later.
Egypt writes the name Seif and says it much the same way; the two spellings are one word with two passports, and an Egyptian Seif and a Kuwaiti Saif have the same name. South Asia took it in with the Mughal vocabulary of titles, which is why the Indian film star Saif Ali Khan carries it. And then there is the sky. Arab astronomers named the line of stars below Orion's belt sayf al-jabbar, the sword of the giant; European star catalogues borrowed the word, mangled it slightly, and Saiph is what a bright star in Orion is still called.
Why parents choose it
One syllable with an edge on it, and a meaning that needs no gloss. The sword names in other languages tend to be long compounds; this one is four letters and a hard landing.

Saif Ali Khan, son of the cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and the actress Sharmila Tagore, has been a leading man in Hindi cinema for three decades and was the corrupt policeman in Omkara and the lead in Sacred Games. Saif Saaeed Shaheen, born Stephen Cherono in Kenya and competing for Qatar, set the 3000 metres steeplechase world record in 2004 and held it for years. The historical Sayf al-Din Qutuz gives the name its martial pedigree.
