History & meaning
Here is the genuine surprise: for late Roman and early medieval writers, Scotti meant the Irish. They used it for raiders and settlers crossing from Ireland, and the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata that straddled the North Channel carried the label east into Argyll. The territory those Gaels dominated eventually took its name from them, which is how a word for “Irishman” ended up naming Scotland. On the Anglo-Scottish border, where the surname is thickest, Scott marked a man who spoke Gaelic or came from the other side of the line.
The Scotts became one of the great Border families, and the surname was ordinary long before anyone used it as a first name. Sir Walter Scott made it glamorous — Waverley, Ivanhoe and the tartan revival he helped stage — and Victorian parents began putting it in front of the surname instead of after it. America took it up hard in the middle of the twentieth century, which is why it now reads as a father’s and grandfather’s name rather than a baby’s.
