History & meaning
There is nothing hidden here. Steinn is stone, the name is the word, and the Old Norse habit of naming children after hard and durable things put it to work early. Its real career, though, is as a second element. Torsten is Thor's stone. Sixten is victory-stone, from sigr and steinn. Steinar pairs it with herr, an army. Karsten, Kjelsten and Holmsten all end the same way. Sten standing alone is the element without the qualifier, which is why it reads as flat and solid rather than heroic.
Swedish history gave it a run of prominence. Sten Sture the Elder was elected regent in 1470 and led the Swedish force that beat the Danish king at Brunkeberg the following year, a battle Stockholm still marks. His kinsman Sten Sture the Younger held the regency from 1512 until he was mortally wounded on the ice of Lake Åsunden in 1520; his death opened the way to the Stockholm Bloodbath and, in reaction to it, to Gustav Vasa and an independent Swedish kingdom. For two generations the man effectively running Sweden was called Sten.

It is about as unpretentious as a name can be. One syllable, one meaning, no mythology to explain and no saint to invoke. English speakers can read it at sight, though they will say it wrong, and the near-miss with Sven means it never sounds unfamiliar.
