History & meaning
The name starts with money. From the Norman period English silver pennies were called sterlings, and the pound sterling took its name from them: a pound of them, by weight, at a fixed fineness. Where the word itself came from is genuinely disputed. The most cited explanation is Old English steorra, star, for the small star on some early pennies. A rival derives it from stærlinc, the starling, a bird that has also been read onto the coinage. An older story about Easterling merchants from the Baltic is picturesque and has been largely abandoned by etymologists.
What is not in doubt is what happened to the word. A currency famous for holding its fineness lent its name to anything of proven quality, so English acquired “sterling character” and “sterling work”. It became a surname, and then — in the American manner, where a virtue that sounds like a surname makes an excellent first name — it began appearing on boys, steadily rather than fashionably, right through the twentieth century.
Why parents choose it
Very few names come with a built-in compliment. It also has an unusual shape: a hard consonant cluster at the front, a soft -ing behind it, and no obvious nickname to negotiate. It sounds expensive without sounding invented, which is the line most word names fail to walk.
