History & meaning
Geʽez ተከለ takala is to plant; ተክል takl is the plant or the seedling; ተክለ takla is the possessive shape, "plant of", waiting for whatever comes next. Ethiopian Christian naming keeps a small stock of these linking words — the Gebre and Kidane pages set out how the construct pattern works across the whole set. Tekle's own image is agricultural and deliberate: not a wild growth, a thing someone put in the ground on purpose, in soil that has a name.
That soil is usually Haymanot, faith. Abune Tekle Haymanot, who lived in the thirteenth century and founded the monastery of Debre Libanos in Shewa, is the most venerated Ethiopian-born saint in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and his cult is why the name is everywhere. Tradition credits him with brokering the transfer of the throne from the Zagwe rulers to Yekuno Amlak in 1270, restoring the Solomonic line, and with praying standing until one leg gave way — which is why icons show him with six wings and a single leg, one of the most recognisable images in Ethiopian art. Two later emperors reigned as Tekle Giyorgis. In ordinary life the compound sheds its second half and men are simply Tekle.
Why parents choose it
Two clean syllables, an unmistakable religious anchor, and a meaning that is gentle rather than martial. For Ethiopian and Eritrean families abroad it also has the advantage of surviving English spelling without damage, which several longer Amharic names do not.
Middle names for Tekle
This name behaves unusually in the middle slot, because to an Amharic or Tigrinya ear whatever follows becomes the thing being planted. The historian Tekle Tsadik Mekouria, whose own name is another compound of the same word, wrote the standard multi-volume Amharic history of Ethiopia.
