History & meaning
Thaddeus belongs to the twelve. Matthew and Mark list an apostle called Thaddaeus, where Luke and Acts have Judas son of James in the same slot, and the church has long treated the two as one man, Jude Thaddaeus. Beyond that the trail goes cold. The name is Greek in the form we have it, almost certainly rendering an Aramaic byname, and no proposed derivation is secure. The old gloss from Aramaic tadda, breast or heart, is a guess that has been repeated until it looks like a fact; the rival theory that Thaddaios is a clipped Greek nickname for Theodosios is a different guess. We would rather say so than pick one.
The name travelled with the cult of Saint Jude and put down roots in Catholic Europe, especially Poland and Italy, long before English speakers took it up. English usage has always been thin, with a nineteenth-century American flicker that produced its most notable bearer, and it has never dated because it never peaked.

Three syllables of unhurried consonants, a real apostolic pedigree, and a nickname, Thad, that is blunt in exactly the way the full name is not.
