History & meaning
Thiago exists because a name got cut in the wrong place. Hebrew Ya'aqov became Greek Iakōbos, Latin Iacobus and, in medieval Iberia, Iago. The apostle James — Sant' Iago — was the patron saint of Christian Spain and the reason half of Europe walked to Compostela, and his name was said so often as a single unit that speakers began to hear Santiago as San Tiago, holy Tiago. The reanalysis stuck. Tiago walked away as a name in its own right, and Portuguese, with the same saint and the same pilgrim traffic, kept it. Brazilian Portuguese prefers the spelling Thiago; European Portuguese usually writes Tiago. Both are said the same way.
That leaves Thiago with a slightly odd biography: a name that is simultaneously new and three thousand years old. Its meaning is inherited whole from James and Jacob — usually rendered "supplanter", from the story of Jacob gripping his brother's heel, though scholars have long noted that Ya'aqov-El may originally have been a sentence name meaning "may God protect". Brazil made Thiago a staple in the late twentieth century, football carried it everywhere else, and Latino families brought it north. It did not appear in the American top 100 in the 1990s. It is now #50.
Why parents choose it
The practical case is bilingualism. Thiago survives an English-speaking classroom intact, and it survives a Portuguese or Spanish-speaking grandmother intact, which is not true of most names that try to sit between the two. Parents who like the substance of James but not its ubiquity get the same apostle and the same three thousand years in a form nobody has heard four times that week.
