Behind Matthijs is Hebrew Mattityahu, gift of Yahweh — one of a family of Hebrew names built on the idea of a child as something given. Greek took the name twice, by slightly different routes, and produced two apostles: Matthaios, whom English calls Matthew, and Matthias, the disciple chosen by lot in Acts to replace Judas. Dutch Matthijs descends from the second, which is why it looks less like Matthew than it is. The clipping to Thijs is old, ordinary and complete: a Dutch Thijs born this century almost certainly has nothing longer on his passport.
Now the part that catches English readers. In Dutch, ij is not an i followed by a j. It functions as a single letter: it had its own key on Dutch typewriters, it takes one square in Dutch crossword puzzles, and it has a capitalisation rule of its own, in which both halves rise together. The lake is the IJsselmeer, the port is IJmuiden, and a man named IJsbrand writes it that way on his documents. The sound is a diphthong that starts around the vowel of bed and glides to ee — closer to English ice than to anything else English can offer, though a Dutch speaker begins it further forward in the mouth than an American does.
