Behind the Arthurian knight lies a real early medieval name: Drust, or its diminutive Drustan, borne by several Pictish kings and latinised as Drustanus. A weathered granite pillar standing near Fowey in Cornwall carries the sixth-century inscription DRVSTANVS HIC IACIT, here lies Drustanus, and it is the closest thing the legend has to a birth certificate. What Drust itself meant is genuinely unclear. A link to a Celtic root for tumult or riot is offered in most reference works, always with a qualifier attached, and we will keep the qualifier.
Then comes the good part. When French poets took the story up in the twelfth century, they reshaped the spelling from Drustan to Tristan under the pull of triste, sad. The tale of Tristan and Iseult is a tragedy of a love potion, an exile and two deaths, and the storytellers simply bent the hero's name to say so. It is one of the clearest cases in European naming of a plot rewriting its own etymology. Malory made him Sir Tristram of Lyonesse; Wagner made him an opera; Welsh tradition kept the older shape in Trystan.
