History & meaning
Norse naming ran mostly on compounds: two words bolted together, one of them very often an animal. The wolf was the busiest animal in the workshop. Úlfr turns up as the second half of dozens of names — Hróðúlfr, which wore down to Rolf, means roughly "fame-wolf" — and as the first half of plenty more. Ulf is what you get when a parent skips the compound entirely and simply calls the boy Wolf.
It was not a rare choice. Runestones across Uppland record Ulfs by the handful, including the man commemorated at Orkesta who took Danegeld in England three separate times, and the sagas are thick with them. The name survived the conversion to Christianity, which many pagan Norse names did not, probably because it was transparent rather than devotional. It faded in the later Middle Ages, came back strongly in twentieth-century Sweden, and was borrowed into German from its Nordic neighbours in the same period. Why parents choose it
Three letters, one syllable, one hard consonant to land on, and a meaning nobody has to be told. Ulf does not soften and it does not shorten, which makes it a useful counterweight to a long or ornate surname. It is also blunt in a way English-language naming rarely allows without sounding like a nickname, and it travels: Scandinavians, Germans and English speakers all read it correctly on sight, which is more than most Norse imports manage. Parents who like Odin but find it heavy often land here instead.
