History & meaning

Unai is not an adaptation of anything. It is the Basque word for the man who looks after the cattle, taken up unchanged. Basque is unusually precise about this: a keeper of sheep is an artzain, a keeper of pigs an urdain, a keeper of goats an ahuntzain, and the element they share is zain, "keeper" or "guard". Unai is generally read as the same formation with the cattle word in front, ground down by centuries of use. In a green, wet, steep country where herding shaped the calendar and the boundaries of every village, the job was worth a word of its own.

As a given name, though, Unai is recent, and the reason is political rather than linguistic. Under Franco, births had to be registered with names in Spanish; Basque forms were translated at the counter or refused outright, and a name that was simply a Basque noun had nowhere to go. A 1977 reform of the civil registry law reopened the door, and native Basque names moved through it at speed. That is why nearly every Unai you meet was born after 1980. Basque itself, worth saying, is not related to Spanish or to any other living language — the Iker page tells that story properly.

Why parents choose it

It is pastoral without being twee, it carries no saint and no dynasty, and it survives an English-speaking mouth intact once you know the second syllable rhymes with "eye". The meaning is a job rather than a virtue, which some parents prefer.
