The likelier is Old French warenne, a warren: a stretch of land enclosed and stocked for breeding game, usually rabbits, which was a real and jealously guarded feudal asset. The alternative is the Norman place name La Varenne, which produced the surname de Warenne — the family that held the earldom of Surrey from the eleventh century. A third strand runs through the Germanic personal name Warin.
As a first name it is an American story. Nineteenth-century families in New England began using Warren as a given name, and it climbed steadily until the 1920s, helped along by Warren G. Harding's election as the twenty-ninth president in 1920. It has been out of fashion since about 1960, which puts it in the same waiting room as Walter and its Edwardian neighbours.
