Wayne is a job description. Old English wægn gave the modern word wagon, and a medieval Wayne or Wain made them, drove them, or repaired them. The surname is scattered across the English Midlands and reached America early. Anthony Wayne, the Revolutionary War general known as Mad Anthony, gave his surname to towns and counties across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.
Its life as a first name is almost entirely a twentieth-century American phenomenon, and one man is responsible for most of it. Marion Robert Morrison was renamed John Wayne by a Fox executive in 1930 — the studio took the surname from that same General Wayne. Once he became the biggest star in Hollywood, American parents started using Wayne as a first name and a middle name in enormous numbers through the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. It has fallen off very sharply since, and now reads squarely as a name from that era.
