History & meaning
Wesley is a map reference. Old English lēah meant a clearing in woodland, and it is the second half of an enormous number of English place names and the surnames taken from them: Ashley, Bradley, Shirley, Wesley. The west clearing. Farmers named their fields; the fields named the families.
What lifted this particular one out of the surname pile was one man. John Wesley, the Anglican priest whose open-air preaching became Methodism, and his brother Charles, who wrote several thousand hymns, made the family name a badge. Methodist families started giving it to sons in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which is why Wesley reached America early and settled in. It has since drifted well clear of its origins; you will meet Wesleys in Rotterdam and São Paulo who have never heard of Methodism.
Why parents choose it
Mostly for Wes. The nickname is easy, mid-century and completely unbothered, and it means the full name can stay a little formal without cost. Wesley also solves a problem that trips up a lot of surname names: it has a real biography attached, so it never sounds invented. It has also been in steady American use for well over a century, which makes it one of the few top-100 names you cannot date a boy by.

Wesley Snipes has acted since the mid-1980s. Wesley Clark, a retired four-star general, was NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe and ran for president in 2004. The Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder played in the 2010 World Cup final. Television supplies one more: Wesley Crusher of Star Trek: The Next Generation, named for the show's creator, Gene Wesley Roddenberry.
