History & meaning
Most nicknames take the front of a name. Xander takes the back. Alexander is Greek alexein, to defend or ward off, plus andros, of man, and clipping the first syllable leaves the "-xandros" half intact — which is why Xander still carries the full meaning, "defender of men", rather than a fragment of it. Dutch and Flemish speakers have done this for a long time, alongside the related Sander, and Xander remains a normal standalone name in the Netherlands.
In English it is much newer. The x spelling arrived properly in the late 1990s, and it is fair to credit Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran from 1997 to 2003, with putting the form in front of American parents. Since then real bearers have taken over the job: the name now belongs to athletes more than to television. Zander is the phonetic respelling and roughly as common.

It is the rare short form that sounds more modern than its parent. Families who love Alexander but not Alex get a different route in, and the x gives it a graphic edge that very few boys' names have. It also sits comfortably on an adult, which is not true of every clipped form that starts life as a nickname.
