History & meaning
Greek took the Hebrew Yôḥānān, "Yahweh is gracious", as Iōánnēs, and Iōánnēs became modern Ioannis. In speech Greeks drop the first vowel, so the everyday form is Giannis, written Γιάννης and transliterated Yannis, Yiannis or Giannis depending on who is doing the transliterating. All four spellings are the same name; there is no difference in Greek.
Its dominance is hard to overstate. Between St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, the name has been at the centre of Orthodox devotion for two millennia, and Greek families traditionally name a first son after his paternal grandfather, which keeps a small pool of names circulating through generations. The result is that Yannis has been one of the two or three commonest men's names in Greece since records exist. Greeks celebrate the name day rather than the birthday, and on 7 January a very large share of the country is celebrating.
Why parents choose it
For Greek families it is a default in the best sense, tying a child to a grandfather and a saint at once. For everyone else it is a way to use John that sounds like a living name rather than an inherited one, with a rhythm closer to Nico than to Jonathan. Greek naming custom also means a Yannis rarely stands alone: he usually has a grandfather of the same name and often a cousin or two as well.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, born in Athens in 1994 to Nigerian parents, has been NBA Most Valuable Player twice and won the 2021 championship with Milwaukee. Yannis Ritsos was among the major Greek poets of the twentieth century and wrote Epitaphios. Yannis Philippakis fronts the band Foals. The composer Iannis Xenakis, who built music out of architectural and mathematical models, used an older transliteration of the same name.
