Yves is a tree. The Germanic element iv meant yew, and yew was the bow wood of northern Europe, so names built on it carried an implication of archery and by extension of war. Continental Germanic produced Ivo; Old French took it as Ive or Yve and eventually wrote it Yves, with a silent s that trips up nearly every English speaker. The Norse Ívarr, usually read as yew warrior, is built on the same first element.
Brittany made it French. St Yves of Kermartin, a thirteenth-century Breton priest and lawyer who defended the poor without charging them, was canonised in 1347 and became the patron saint of lawyers; his feast on 19 May is still a major Breton pilgrimage. From there Yves spread through France and stayed a solid mainstream choice until the second half of the twentieth century. It now reads as a name from the generation of French cinema and couture.

Yves Montand, one of the great French actors and singers, was born Ivo Livi in Tuscany in 1921 and had his Italian name Frenchified on arrival. The painter Yves Klein patented his own ultramarine, and the surrealist Yves Tanguy painted the landscapes nobody can place.
