History & meaning
Zion starts as geography. In 2 Samuel, David takes the Jebusite stronghold on a hill in Jerusalem and it is called the stronghold of Zion. What the word itself meant before that is not settled — proposals include a citadel or fortification and a dry or parched place, and the honest position is that nobody knows. The meaning it acquired is far larger than the meaning it started with: Zion came to stand for the Temple mount, then for Jerusalem, then for the whole people of Israel, then for the idea of a homeland as such. Zionism takes its name from that last step.
Rastafari carried the word somewhere else again, using Zion for Ethiopia and for Africa as the place of return, against Babylon as the place of exile. Reggae made the term familiar worldwide. As a personal name Zion is genuinely modern — it barely registers on American records before the 1990s. Lauryn Hill's song "To Zion", written in 1998 for her son Zion David Marley, is a fair marker for the point at which it became a name people actually gave.
