Abebe

History & meaning

Abebe is not a noun but a finished sentence. In Amharic, አበበ abbäbä is a verb in the perfect tense — he has flowered — and it belongs to a large class of Ethiopian men’s names that are complete clauses rather than words: Bekele, he has sprouted; Tadesse, he has been renewed. The same root gives አበባ abeba, flower, the word sitting inside Addis Ababa, new flower, which is what Empress Taytu called the capital when it was founded in the 1880s.

The language behind the name is Semitic. Amharic is a cousin of Hebrew and Arabic, written not in an alphabet but in the Geʽez script, an abugida of more than two hundred characters in which each sign carries a consonant and its vowel as one unit. Ethiopian naming also runs on a rule that reframes every name on this page: there are no inherited surnames. A person’s second name is their father’s given name, and the third, when it is used, is the grandfather’s. Abebe Bikila was Abebe, son of Bikila. His children were not Bikilas.

Why parents choose it

The image does the work. A child described as having flowered is a small, complete piece of praise, and Amharic speakers hear the verb as a verb rather than as a fossil — the way English speakers no longer hear protector inside William. Abroad, Abebe has a second advantage: three open syllables an English mouth manages on the first attempt, attached to a name nobody mistakes for anything but Ethiopian.

Famous Abebes

Abebe Bikila ran the 1960 Rome Olympic marathon barefoot, much of it over cobblestones, and won in 2:15:16, a world best and the first Olympic gold medal won by a Black African athlete. In Tokyo four years later he won again, this time in shoes and weeks after an appendectomy, becoming the first man to take two Olympic marathons. Ethiopia’s distance-running tradition is usually dated to that race in Rome. Abebe Aregai commanded resistance fighters in Shewa through the Italian occupation of 1936 to 1941 and served as Prime Minister of Ethiopia from 1957 until he was killed during the attempted coup of 1960.

Consider instead
