History & meaning
ደስታ desta is simply the Amharic word for joy, and that plainness sets it apart from the men’s names around it. Abebe and Bekele are conjugated verbs; Alemayehu is an entire sentence. Desta is a noun you could use in a shop. Amharic keeps a small set of these vocabulary names, and since a bare noun carries no grammatical gender in this position, they tend to be unisex — Desta is given to girls as readily as to boys in Ethiopia, which is worth knowing before choosing it in a country where it will be read as one or the other.

He is remembered among the patriots of that war, and a hospital in Addis Ababa carries his name. Beyond him, Desta’s presence is everyday rather than celebrated: a common given name, a common father’s name, and the ordinary word for joy in the mouths of ninety million speakers.
