History & meaning
Almost every account of this name will tell you that Aitor was the first Basque, the patriarch from whom the seven provinces descend. The difficulty is that no text mentions him before 1845. In that year Agustin Chaho — a writer, journalist and romantic nationalist from Zuberoa in the French Basque Country — published "La légende d'Aitor" in the Paris review Ariel, and handed his people a founding ancestor they had not previously had. Chaho presented the legend as recovered tradition. Nobody has found a trace of it anywhere before him.
The tidy translation "good father", from aita and on, came later and is folk etymology; it is not how Basque builds compounds, and it fits a little too well. The likelier source is the phrase aitoren semeak, literally "sons of good fathers", which Basque used for its class of hidalgos — Chaho may have lifted a patriarch out of an idiom. Either way the invention took hold completely. Within a few decades Aitor was national property, adopted by the Basque nationalist movement that formed at the end of the century, and by the late twentieth century he was one of the standard names on a Basque school register. A fabrication that an entire people chose to keep is a rarer thing than an ancient name, and a better story.
Why parents choose it
It sounds carved out of rock and it is only as old as the railway, which bothers nobody. Two heavy syllables, symmetrical, impossible to mispronounce in Spanish, French or English, and unmistakably Basque without being a slogan.

Aitor Karanka played for Athletic Club and won three Champions League titles as a defender at Real Madrid, later returning as José Mourinho's assistant and then managing Middlesbrough into the Premier League. Aitor Ocio defended for Athletic Club and Sevilla. Aitor Esteban, a lawyer from Bilbao, spent years as the Basque Nationalist Party's spokesman in the Spanish Congress of Deputies.
