History & meaning
Oier looks exactly like the other Basque names of its generation and is a different animal entirely. Ibai is a river, Aritz an oak, Ekaitz a storm; Oier is not a word at all. It is what local speech made of Oger, a name that arrived from the north. Navarre and the Basque coast sat inside the Frankish and Gascon orbit and on the pilgrim road to Compostela, and Germanic names travelled those routes and were reshaped by the mouths that received them — the g of Oger softened to a glide, and Oier is the result. The underlying name is the one carried by Ogier the Dane of the chansons de geste, generally traced to Germanic elements for wealth and spear.
What matters for a parent is that the medieval attestations are real. Oier turns up in Navarrese and Gipuzkoan documents as an ordinary man's name at a time when the vocabulary names did not exist, and that is unusual in this group. When Basque given names became registrable again after 1977 and a generation of parents went looking for alternatives to the Spanish saints' calendar, most of what they found had been invented in the previous hundred years. Oier had actually been used. It came back strongest where the old records are thickest, and it still feels most at home there.
