History & meaning
The Greek Aléxandros is built from alexein, to ward off or defend, and andros, of a man: one who stands in front of other men. Latin took it as Alexander, and Italian did to it what Italian does to every Latin x — turned it into a doubled s. The same rule gives maximus Massimo and Alexius Alessio. Alexander the Great is Alessandro Magno in every Italian schoolbook, which is a large part of why the name never fell out of use here.
Italy has its own Alessandri, too. A soldier-saint martyred at Bergamo became the city’s patron, and in 1168 the Lombard League founded a fortress town in Piedmont and named it Alessandria for Pope Alexander III, their ally against the emperor. The town is still on the map. By the modern period the name belonged to the country’s founding figures: Alessandro Volta, who built the first battery and gave his surname to the volt, and Alessandro Manzoni, whose novel I promessi sposi effectively settled what modern written Italian would sound like.
Why parents choose it
Four syllables is a lot of name, and Italian spends all of them. Nothing here is swallowed: a-les-SAN-dro keeps four clean vowels where English Alexander mumbles three of its four into a schwa. Say each vowel as printed — ah, eh, ah, oh — and you have it.
It also comes with escape routes. Sandro is a full name in its own right, Ale is what friends actually say, and Alex works in any country a passport will reach. Parents get the grandeur of the long form and none of the obligation to use it.
