History & meaning
Greek built two names out of one verb. Alexein means to ward off or keep away; add the adjectival ending and you get Aléxios, the defending one; add andros instead and you get Aléxandros, defender of men. They share a root and nothing else, so Alessio is Alessandro’s cousin rather than his nickname — a distinction Italians observe and English speakers usually miss. The eastern half of the Roman world preferred the shorter one: five Byzantine emperors were called Alexios, and the first of them, Alexios I Komnenos, sent the appeal to the West in 1095 that helped set the First Crusade in motion. From the same Greek stem, by way of Church Slavonic, come Russian Alexei and its many spellings.
The Italian name owes most to a legend. Sant’Alessio was said to be a Roman nobleman who walked out on the morning of his wedding, lived as a beggar in Syria, then came home years later so changed that his own household did not know him and gave him a place to sleep under the staircase, where he stayed seventeen years. The story travelled the medieval West in verse and in sermons, and the church on the Aventine that carries his name still shows visitors a wooden stair. His feast is 17 July. The name itself only became ordinary in Italy in the second half of the twentieth century, and it has been ordinary ever since.
Why parents choose it
The double consonant is the whole game. In Italian a doubled letter is not a spelling convention — it is held, and holding it or not changes the word: pala is a shovel, palla is a ball; nono is ninth, nonno is a grandfather. So Alessio wants a long, leaning s: ah-LESS-syoh, with the tongue staying put a beat before it releases. The usual English attempt, ah-LAY-see-oh, goes wrong twice over, stretching the vowel and shortening the consonant.
Beyond that it is a compact, unfussy name with a strong meaning and an easy short form. Ale does duty for the whole of childhood, and Alex is on the passport when the family leaves the country.

Alessio Figalli won the Fields Medal in 2018 for work on optimal transport, the branch of mathematics concerned with moving mass from one place to another as cheaply as possible. Alessio Boni has been a fixture of Italian television and cinema since La meglio gioventù. Alessio Romagnoli captained AC Milan as a central defender before moving to Lazio.
