History & meaning
Arṇava is an old word. It appears in the Rigveda for water that is restless and surging, and it began life as an adjective — foaming, agitated — before settling into a noun for the sea. Classical Sanskrit generally prefers samudra or sāgara when it simply means the ocean on a map, which leaves arṇava with the more elemental sense: the sea as a thing in motion.
The name is much younger than the word. You will meet a great many Arnavs in India under twenty-five and very few over fifty, because Sanskrit works as an open dictionary for Indian parents in a way that Latin no longer does for English ones: a family goes to the lexicon, finds a word with the right sound and the right sense, and uses it. The 2011 Star Plus serial Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, whose lead character was Arnav Singh Raizada, is frequently credited with pushing it from usable to popular. Bengali speakers arrive at the same name from the other side of the alphabet: the Sanskrit v is read as b, giving Arnab, as in the broadcaster Arnab Goswami.
Why parents choose it
Two crisp syllables, a meaning that is grand without being solemn, and no regional or sectarian flag attached to it. It also survives an English-language roll call intact, which is more than can be said for a lot of four-syllable Sanskrit alternatives.

Rather than a roll of famous adults, Arnav has a different kind of currency: it is one of a small group of Sanskrit water words, with Varun and Sagar, that Indian parents reached for in the same decade.
