History & meaning
Kai is not one name. It is at least four, and they are not related to each other. In Hawaiian, kai is the sea. In Mandarin, kǎi means triumph. In Japanese it is a sound that several different kanji can carry, so a Japanese Kai might be sea, or open, or shell, depending on what his parents wrote. In Frisian, Danish and northern German, Kai or Kaj has been in use for centuries with no agreed derivation at all; scholars have proposed shortenings of Gerhard and Nikolaus, and a descent from the Roman Gaius, without settling it. Welsh adds a fifth thread in Cai, the Arthurian knight who became Sir Kay.
The three letters are a coincidence of transliteration, not a family tree, and no honest page can hand you a single meaning. What is true is that this convergence is precisely why the name travels. Kai entered the American top 100 as a short, vowel-forward name with surf associations and a Pacific ring, at a point when parents were reaching for names that would work in more than one country.
Why parents choose it
Portability. Kai needs no explanation in Honolulu, Hamburg, Osaka or Cardiff, it survives every accent, it cannot be misspelled in any useful way, and it resists nicknames because it already is one. For families with more than one heritage it can quietly honour both sides at once, which very few names manage.
