History & meaning
Arnold is a Frankish compound: arn, eagle, joined to wald, rule or power. Eagle-ruler is the standard gloss, and unlike many Germanic names its elements are not in dispute — the same arn turns up in Arnulf and in the German surname Arnstein. Medieval France used Arnaut and Arnaud freely; the troubadour Arnaut Daniel, whom Dante called the better craftsman, wrote in Occitan in the late twelfth century.
The Normans carried the name into England, where it hardened into a surname before returning as a first name. American history gave the surname a permanent bruise in Benedict Arnold, but the given name was untroubled by it and stayed in regular use through the first decades of the twentieth century, especially among German and Jewish American families. It has faded a long way since, and for most people under fifty the name now belongs almost entirely to one bodybuilder from Styria. The eagle at the heart of it has kept better company than the name itself: arn is the same element behind Arnulf, behind the Dutch Arend, and behind a long list of German place names.
Why parents choose it
Almost nobody is naming a baby Arnold, which is exactly the appeal for parents already circling Arthur, Albert and Alfred. The meaning is genuinely strong, the shape is compact, and Arnie is warm in a way the full name is not. It is a name to choose deliberately rather than to drift into.

Arlo keeps the opening syllable and none of the weight. Alaric offers a rarer Germanic ruler-name with the same hard consonants. If the appeal is really the vintage register rather than the eagle, August gets you there with far less resistance.
