History & meaning
Gothic is a dead language with a small surviving corpus, which makes Alaric unusual: we can read its parts with confidence. Ala is all; reiks is ruler or king, cognate with Latin rex and with the -ric that closes Frederick, Roderick and Ulric. Put together they give ruler of all, a name that was clearly meant as a claim rather than a description.
The first Alaric made good on it. Born around 370, he led the Visigoths through two decades of pressure on the Western Empire and finally entered Rome on 24 August 410, sacking the city for three days. The shock ran through the Mediterranean world; it was in direct response that Augustine of Hippo began the City of God. Alaric died within months and, according to Jordanes, was buried under a diverted river. A second Alaric ruled the Visigoths in Gaul and Spain, issued the law compilation known as the Breviary of Alaric in 506, and was killed the following year by Clovis — the Frankish king whose own name became Louis. The name lived on in Iberia as Alarico and has only recently found English-speaking parents again.
