History & meaning
In 189 BC the Seleucid empire was still reeling from its defeat by Rome at Magnesia, and Artashes, its governor in Greater Armenia, took the opportunity to declare himself king. Strabo records that he and Zariadres split the region between them; Artashes then pushed the borders outward and marked them with stone pillars inscribed in Aramaic, several of which have been dug up in modern Armenia. He founded Artashat as his capital and left a dynasty that lasted almost two centuries, peaking under his descendant Tigran the Great.
The name belongs to the Iranian layer that runs through Armenian royal vocabulary. Arta is the Zoroastrian word for truth and cosmic order, the same element in Artaxerxes and in Persian Ardeshir, and it is joined to a word for kingship. Khorenatsi also attached a romance to the name: King Artashes carrying off the Alan princess Satenik by throwing a cord of red leather across the river, a passage quoted so often in Armenian schools that most adults can still produce a line of it.
