History & meaning
Latin had a small industry in virtue names. Pius, Clemens, Felix, Innocentius and Benignus were all adjectives before they were people, and early Christians favoured them precisely because they described a character rather than a clan. Benignus is transparent: bene, well, plus the old root for being born or begotten, giving something like "of good stock" and settling into the everyday sense of kindly. Saint Benignus of Dijon, a martyr venerated in Burgundy, carried it into the medieval calendar, and Spanish and Italian both kept it whole as Benigno.
It came to the Philippines as one more saint's name in the friars' registers, part of the Spanish-colonial layer that also gave the islands Gregorio, Basilio and Amado and that sits quite separately from native Tagalog names like Bayani. Then one family made it political. Benigno Aquino Sr. was a Speaker of the National Assembly; his son Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was the opposition senator shot on the tarmac at Manila International Airport on 21 August 1983, an assassination that triggered the People Power revolution; his grandson Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III was president from 2010 to 2016. The airport now carries Ninoy's name, and in the Philippines the given name is inseparable from that story.

Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III (1960–2021) served as the fifteenth president of the Philippines. Their father and grandfather Benigno Aquino Sr. (1894–1947) held the speakership of the wartime National Assembly. The Italian actor and director Roberto Benigni carries the same word as a surname.
