History & meaning
Theodōros was a thank-you note in name form: a child given by a god, named for the giving. Greek parents used it long before Christianity, but the church made it enormous, and by the Byzantine centuries a Theodore turns up in every register — soldiers, patriarchs, two saints called Theodore of Amasea and Theodore Stratelates, a pope. Latin borrowed it as Theodorus, and Spain, Italy and Portugal all wore the h away to arrive at Teodoro.
In the Philippines it landed with the Spanish clergy and then produced its own bearers, most of them writers: it is the name of the historian who rewrote how Filipinos tell their own revolution. One caution worth carrying: Teodoro and Teodorico look like relatives and are not. Teodorico is the Spanish form of Theodoric, a Germanic name built from thiuda, people, and rīks, ruler — an entirely separate word with an accidental resemblance. Only Teodoro means gift of God. Why parents choose it
It delivers Teo and Teddy — the two nicknames driving Theodore's enormous run — without putting the child in a classroom with three other Theodores. For Spanish- or Tagalog-speaking families it also stays pronounceable on both sides of the household, which the English form does not.
