Bennett is Benedict with the Latin worn off. Medieval English speakers took Benedictus — "blessed", the name of the monk whose Rule organised Western monasticism — and said it the way they said everything else, at speed: Benet, Bennet, Bennett. For most of the Middle Ages that was simply what the name sounded like in English. Benedict was the version you wrote down in church Latin.
Because the spoken form was everywhere, it hardened into a surname while the formal spelling stayed with abbots and popes. That is how the twentieth century met the word: as a last name on a marquee. The return journey began in the 1990s, when American parents started reading first names off their own family trees, and Bennett has gone further than its neighbours — at #40 it now outranks Everett and every other -ett name in the U.S. top 100.
Why parents choose it
It solves a specific problem. Parents who want a boy called Ben but find Benjamin too well used, at #11, get the nickname without the queue — and the two names are not related at all, since Benjamin is Hebrew for "son of the right hand".
