History & meaning
English surnames almost always come off a father, a trade or a place. Emmett is one of the small class that come off a mother. Emma was among the commonest women's names in medieval England — Emma of Normandy was queen consort first to Æthelred the Unready and then to Cnut, which did the name no harm — and its everyday pet form was Emmot. By the fourteenth century Emmot had hardened into the hereditary surnames Emmott and Emmett. A name now read as rugged and woodsy is, etymologically, Emma's boy, and Emma itself means whole or universal.
It became a first name through two separate doors. Nineteenth-century American families took surnames as forenames wholesale, and Irish families used Emmet in tribute to Robert Emmet, the young Dublin revolutionary hanged in 1803 after a failed rising. Both channels fed American usage. The name then went quiet for most of the twentieth century and came back after 2000 with everything else in waistcoats.
