Split Berhanu and you get ብርሃን berhan, light, and a final -u, the Amharic third-person possessive: his light. Whose light is not stated, and does not need to be. In an Ethiopian Orthodox culture the light is God’s, and the name works as a quiet confession rather than a description of the child. Geʽez, the church’s liturgical language, has the same word, and it recurs across Ethiopian and Eritrean naming — Berhane, light of; Berhan on its own; Birhan in Tigrinya.

Berhanu Nega, an economist who taught at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, won the Addis Ababa mayoral election of 2005, was imprisoned after that disputed vote, spent years in exile leading an opposition movement, and returned to become Ethiopia’s Minister of Education in 2021. Berhanu Zerihun, who died in 1987, was among the most widely read Amharic novelists and journalists of the twentieth century, and a reminder that Amharic has a substantial modern literature of its own.
