History & meaning
ተስፋ tesfa came into Amharic from Geʽez, where it renders hope in the theological sense — the thing the Psalms and the Epistles are talking about, not optimism about the weather. The ending is pure grammar: Amharic marks "my" by adding -ye to a noun, so tesfa becomes tesfaye, and a class of Ethiopian names is built exactly this way. Tsegaye, "my grace", is the best-known companion, and its Tigrinya counterpart has its own page at Tsegay. What these names have in common is a point of view: the child is being described in terms of what the parents feel, not what the child is.
The word is productive in the other direction too. Ethiopian Christian naming builds compounds on it — Tesfamariam, hope of Mary; Tesfamichael, hope of Michael — and Tesfa stands alone as a name. Outside Ethiopia the form most Westerners have seen is a father's name doing surname duty, most visibly for the Ethiopian-Canadian singer Abel Tesfaye, who records as The Weeknd. It says the quiet part out loud. Plenty of names glance at optimism; Tesfaye states a relationship, and it does so in three warm, open syllables that are easy for English speakers to pronounce on the first attempt — not something you can say of every Amharic name.

Tesfaye Sahlu, known to generations of Ethiopian children as Ababa Tesfaye, presented the country's children's storytelling programme on national television for decades and was mourned nationally when he died in 2019. The writer Tesfaye Gebreab, born in Eritrea to Ethiopian parents, was one of the most widely read and most argued-over Amharic prose authors of his generation.
