History & meaning
The Hebrew is a small declaration: dan, he judged, and El, God. God is my judge — meaning that no earthly court is, which is exactly the point of the book that carries the name. Daniel reads the writing on the wall at Belshazzar's feast, survives a night in the lion pit, and refuses the king's food; the whole text is about a man under a foreign power answering to a higher one. Jews and Christians both kept the name, and Greek-speaking Christians passed Daniēl into Church Slavonic, where it settled as Daniil. It is one of the few Russian names with a Hebrew rather than a Greek or Latin root, Mikhail being the other obvious one, though both came north along the same Byzantine road.
Russia's own Daniil is the reason Moscow exists as a capital. Daniil Aleksandrovich, youngest son of Alexander Nevsky, was handed Moscow as a minor holding in the 1260s when it was a stockade on a river bend, ruled it for four decades, founded the Danilov Monastery on its southern approach, and left a line that spent the next two centuries absorbing everything around it. He was canonised in 1652, and the monastery he founded is the working headquarters of the Moscow patriarchate today. The Ukrainian name from the same source is Danylo, borne by Danylo Romanovych, who was crowned king of Rus in 1253; it is a separate name, not a variant spelling. Modern Russian parents brought Daniil back hard after 1990, and it has been near the top of the birth registers ever since.
Why parents choose it
It is Daniel with an extra beat and the stress moved to the end, which turns a very familiar name into something that sounds deliberate. The short form Danya arrives ready-made, and it is gentle in a way Dan is not.
