History & meaning
Strip the ending and you have Daniel: Hebrew Daniyyel, "God is my judge", the prophet who read the writing on the wall and spent a night with the lions. The -ilo is Romance dressing, the sort of soft vowel ending Spanish, Portuguese and Italian like to give a borrowed name, and it changes the sound without touching the sense. A second Danilo grew up entirely separately in the Balkans, where it is not an elaboration at all but the ordinary Serbian, Montenegrin and Slovene form of Daniel; rulers of Montenegro bore it in both the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries.
The Philippine story is the interesting one. Baptismal registers under Spain ran on the church calendar, and Daniel and his relatives entered the archipelago that way. Danilo then did something Daniel never did in Spain: it became a generational badge. Ask a Filipino to picture a Danilo and they will describe a man born somewhere between the war and the 1970s, almost certainly answering to Danny. The name arrived with the colonial vocabulary but its peak is wholly local, and it sits on the Spanish side of Philippine naming, opposite the native Tagalog layer of Dakila and Diwa.

In literature the name belongs to Danilo Kiš, the Serbian author of A Tomb for Boris Davidovich.
