Ask a Tagalog speaker what diwa means and you may get three answers, all correct. It is the spirit or animating principle of a person. It is the essence of a thing. And in a classroom it is the gist — ano ang diwa ng tula, what is the sense of the poem. That range is why the word turns up in national language rather than private speech: the spirit of Christmas, the spirit of independence, the spirit behind a law are all rendered with diwa.
Where the word itself comes from is less settled than the meaning. It sits beside diwata, "nature spirit", which is a clear old borrowing from Sanskrit devatā carried into the archipelago through Malay trade centuries before Magellan. Whether diwa is the same loan worn short or a native Austronesian word that the loan happened to resemble is not something anyone can settle from the evidence.
