History & meaning
Tagalog splits a storm into parts that English tends to bundle. Kidlat is the flash and kulog is the noise; bagyo, the typhoon, is its own word again, and in a country that takes roughly twenty of them a year it is not a literary term. So Kidlat is not a poetic name for lightning. It is lightning, the word a weather bulletin uses. The same word does duty for speed the way it does in English — kasimbilis ng kidlat, as fast as lightning — which gives the name a second, lighter reading that most Filipinos will hear first.
As a given name it is recent and it is a choice. Philippine baptismal records ran on the Catholic calendar for three centuries, and the nationalist turn of the twentieth century is what put native vocabulary back on birth certificates. Kidlat sits at the loud end of that recovery. Its most famous bearer picked it deliberately: the Baguio filmmaker Eric de Guia took the working name Kidlat Tahimik, "silent lightning", in the 1970s, and the joke in the pairing — a flash that makes no sound — is exactly the tension the name carries.
Why parents choose it
Two hard syllables, a K and a T bracketing it, and a meaning nobody needs explained in either language once they are told the word. It is the rare Filipino name that sounds forceful in English without sounding foreign, and it survives a roll call in Manila or Milwaukee equally well. Famous Kidlats
Kidlat Tahimik, born Eric Oteyza de Guia in 1942, made Perfumed Nightmare in 1977 on a shoestring and became the founding figure of Philippine independent cinema; he was named a National Artist of the Philippines in 2018. His son Kidlat de Guia, who died in 2021, was a photographer and installation artist in his own right and a fixture of the Baguio arts scene. Between them they are most of the name's public life, which is honest to how new it is.
