History & meaning
Two names hide under this spelling, and they are not related. The first belongs to the priest at Shiloh in the opening chapters of 1 Samuel: an old man who takes in a boy given to the sanctuary, mistakes the child's night-time vision for his own summons, cannot control his sons, and finally topples backwards off his seat and dies when word arrives that the ark has been captured. His name is written with the Hebrew letter ayin, and the traditional gloss is "ascent" or "height", from the root meaning to go up. The second Eli is the front end of Eliyahu — eli, my God, with aleph — which is the name the world knows as Elijah.
That split explains the modern arithmetic. Elijah and Elias both sit high in the American top 100, and a great many of the boys carrying them are called Eli at home, so the name is far more audible than its own registrations. Eli has an independent American history as well, laid down by Puritan settlers who mined the Old Testament for names other colonists had overlooked. That is how a minor priest of Shiloh ended up attached to a cotton gin patent and, eventually, to a pharmaceutical company in Indianapolis.
