The Aemilii were one of the oldest patrician houses of Rome, and they left their name on the map: the Via Aemilia, the road driven across the north in 187 BC by the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, still runs through the region called Emilia, half of modern Emilia-Romagna. What Aemilius meant before it was a surname is guesswork. The usual gloss connects it to aemulus, rival or emulous, someone who strives to match another; that is the honest state of the evidence, and any page that tells you flatly that Emilio means "eager" is overselling.
Spanish and Italian both kept the name alive through the saints and then through the eighteenth-century enthusiasm for Rome. It reached the Philippines with the friars, and there it did something extra: it attached itself to the revolution. Two of the men who made the break with Spain were called Emilio, which is why the name reads in Manila the way Ulysses or Abraham reads in the United States, less a style choice than a piece of civic furniture. It belongs firmly to the Spanish layer of Philippine naming, alongside Gregorio and Ramon, rather than the native Tagalog layer.
