History & meaning
Emrys is what Welsh made of Ambrosius. The Latin name arrived with Rome and belongs above all to Ambrosius Aurelianus, the Romano-British commander whom Gildas, writing in the sixth century, singles out for rallying the Britons against the Saxons. He is one of the very few named people from that dark stretch of British history whom historians are willing to treat as real. Regular Welsh sound change wore Ambrosius down to Emrys, keeping the meaning intact: deathless, of the immortals.
The legend grew from there. In the ninth-century Historia Brittonum, King Vortigern's tower will not stand, his advisers demand the blood of a fatherless boy, and the boy brought before him instead reveals a pool under the foundations where a red dragon and a white dragon are fighting. The boy is named Ambrosius. Geoffrey of Monmouth retold the scene in 1136 with Merlin in the role, and Welsh tradition merged the two into Myrddin Emrys. The hill where it is set, Dinas Emrys, is a genuine fortified site in Eryri.

It is a mythic name that does not sound like fancy dress. Two syllables, a familiar Em- opening, and no pronunciation lesson required outside Wales — it sits naturally beside Emmett and Ellis while carrying a great deal more history.
