History & meaning
The Welsh Idris is old enough to have a giant attached to it. Idris Gawr — Idris the Giant — was a seventh-century king of Meirionnydd whom later tradition remembered as a poet and star-watcher of enormous size. His seat is Cadair Idris, the mountain above Dolgellau, and the local promise is that anyone who spends a night on its summit comes down either a poet or a madman. The name itself is a compound of iudd, lord, and ris, ardent or impulsive: a lord with fire in him.
The Arabic Idrīs is a separate name that happens to be spelled the same way in English. He is named twice in the Qur'an, in Surah Maryam and Surah al-Anbiya, as a prophet, a man of truth and of patience, and Islamic tradition generally identifies him with the biblical Enoch. The name spread with Islam: Idris I founded the Idrisid dynasty in Morocco at the end of the eighth century and is buried at the town that carries his name, and Idris I ruled Libya as king from 1951 until 1969. Nothing links the two Idrises except the letters.

One spelling honours two heritages, which matters in a great many households. Beyond that it is short, stress-forward and almost impossible to mispronounce in English, and it has a living namesake most people can picture.
